Apple's Knowledge Base provides a handy summary of the available updates for MacOS 9. Of particular interest, this support document notes that you 'must install all prerequisite software before installing any update'.

Pre-G3 based Macs that are capable of booting MacOS 9 only officially support MacOS 9.1 although hacks are available that make it possible to install MacOS 9.2.2 on some with pre-'NewWorld' ROMs. Apple recommends that you install the last version that your Mac will officially support.

How do you install the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' on a PowerPC-based Mac?
Apple's Knowledge Base provides brief instructions on how to 'Install MacOS 9 to use Classic Applications' on PowerPC-based Macs that did not ship with the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' pre-installed. Please note that the 'Classic Environment' is not supported on PowerPC-based Macs running MacOS X 10.5 'Leopard.'
For other scenarios, the process of installing the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' or a 'bootable' MacOS 9 'over' a current MacOS X installation may be a bit more involved. An archived blog posting from the now defunct MacFixIt blog has detailed tips and instructions that you may find to be useful.
